The Dark Knight’s Joker - Origins of insanity

May 7, 2008

Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight is slated for release this summer, but do you know the true origins behind the green-haired grinning pyscho?

Probably not, but that’s why we’re here.

Released in 1988 the origins of Joker’s psychotic nature were revealed in the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke. The Dark Knight’s greatest enemy was brought to us by Alan Moore (Watchmen & V for Vendetta). In this graphic novel The Joker was a failed stand-up comedian turned psycho-murderer. A man brought to insanity by one horrible day. The truly dark part of this story was when the stand-up-comedian subjected Commissioner Gordon & his daughter to a torture that is unthinkable to us average Joe’s. The Joker shoots Barbara Gordon in the spine, photographs her nude crippled body and proceeds to show Commissioner Gordon the photos in an attempt to break his mind.

Joker’s origin is revealed in this tale of insanity and human perseverance. Looking to prove that any man can be pushed past his breaking point and go mad, the Joker attempts to drive Commissioner Gordon insane. After shooting and permanently paralyzing his daughter Barbara (a.k.a. Batgirl), the Joker kidnaps the commissioner and attacks his mind in hopes of breaking the man. But refusing to give up, Gordon maintains his sanity with the help of Batman in an effort to best the madman. ” — DC

Now who’s interested to see The Dark Knight? This is bound to be the darkest, most thrilling film in the series.
