How powerful was the Apollo 11 computer?
November 15, 2009
“With all the buzz about the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing I got to thinking, how powerful were the computers that “took us to the Moon?” It turns out, they were nothing short of amazing. If you’ve never had a nerdy bone in your body, feel free to skip this post. But, if you ever laid on your back under the stars and thought about Mercury, Gemini, Apollo or the Space Shuttle, read on and see if you’re as geek-struck as I was researching this.”

ITG’s xpPhone gets options for larger screen and Windows 7, loses sense of identity
November 15, 2009
It makes sense to release your mostly-theoretical (so far, anyway) desktop OS-based slider handset with the world’s newest and best version of Windows, but when your slider handset is dubbed “xpPhone” things become a bit more muddled. But that’s the word from Pocketables, who’s been in touch with ITG and learned that the MID / phone will not only ship with a Windows 7 option, but also be available in 4.3-inch, 4.8-inch and 7-inch screen sizes. There’s also rumors of price ranging from $500 to $700, but what we’d really like at this point is a bit of a demo of this thing in action — especially now that there’s a similar ViewSonic-branded device breathing down its neck.

Optoma’s screen-in-a-bag
November 12, 2009

Optoma doesn’t have a price, release date or even a name for this thing, but it’s a pretty solid idea: a portfolio-style case with slots for a pico projector and miscellanea on one side, with a pop-up miniature projector screen on the other half. We guess you could call it a “pico screen” if you don’t mind odd looks from math nerds who actually know what pico means.

NVIDIA CEO shoots down talk of Intel-compatible x86 chip, says his home is ‘all Apple’
November 9, 2009

NVIDIA’s feud with Intel may be at an all-time high these days, but it looks like the company isn’t about to go as far as to produce its own Intel-compatible x86 chip, despite persistent rumors to the contrary. That word comes straight from NVIDIA’s always talkative CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, who flatly said “no” when asked if there was any truth to the rumors. He further went on to add NVIDIA’s focus is on visual and parallel computing, and on “getting our GPUs into the lowest power platforms we can imagine and driving mobile computing with it” — as it’s now attempting to do with Tegra. In a separate discussion after a talk in Dubai, Huang also interestingly revealed that the computers in his household are “all Apple,” but he naturally didn’t just leave it there — head on past the break for the complete, must-read quote (as reported by Shufflegazine).
