Too Far a Cry, A Cry Two Far, Cry me a Too Far
January 28, 2008
A little behind the times, but since I get back from Australia, I decided to pop in my brother’s old school computer games which included Stronghold Crusader, and Far Cry. Now, I’m not a gamer, but I have played a bit of Ghost Recon, and I guess Far Cry and Recon were big around the same time. So it’s wonderful: you’re shooting up mercenaries on a tropical island, poking between bushes and WW2 war relics with your SMG’s, sniper rifle, and machete. The first four stages were really getting me into this game… but then I walk into a room where a DnA-warped monkey man is ripping up one the mercenaries that I wanted to blast. In other words, I basically find myself playing DOOM. I like playing a good sci fi game, but if I wanted to blast space aliens from hell then I’d stick DOOM in the drive and pull out the double-barrel. To me, it’s such a cop-out to bust into the alien world when you might have been unravelling a reasonably realistic plot. Far Cry 2 is coming out and Ubisoft drops you into
Africa where there’s more than enough reason to be on your toes. I’m just hoping that while I’m blasting twisted guerrillas in the middle of the rainforest, I don’t run into King Kong, or ET, or Worf, or Rudolph. Pull me into the plot with intellect… lord knows there’s enough twisted things going on out there and enough motivation for a man fighting for survival to kick some ass in Africa.

Rumorbag – Crysis for PS3 not 360?
January 18, 2008

Oh mighty rumorbag what do we have here? — Crysis for the PS3 and not the 360.
According to sources the killer PC title will be now be a PS3 exclusive. The original rumor stated that Crysis would appear on both consoles but due to technical difficulties on the 360, it’s been canned. Hard-to-believe — yes, considering the PS3 has been a developers worst nightmare.
Crysis is reportedly a port of the PC version and will have extra game modes and a few new features.

Sony’s PS3 – To Overtake Wii & 360 says fanboi’s
January 16, 2008

According to numerous sources, the PS3 is set to overtake the extremely popular Wii and the dev proved 360 in a matter of weeks. Now, I’m all for the best system winning the battle of the bulge but I really don’t believe that the PS3 is the system to trade your cow in for. Not yet anyway, and probably not for some time. In my opinion and many other gamers out there; these systems are meant for gaming…The PS3 has very few games that I would ever buy and waste my life away with. The games that it does have are just horrible ports from other systems. Just try Orange Box on a 360 and then try it on a PS3 and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
The one and only reason that it is being picked up by consumer’s is not because it’s a better gaming console — Nope, it’s because of this Blu-Ray / HD-DVD fiasco. Which again, isn’t going anywhere! Yes, Blu-Ray may win but that doesn’t change the fact that downloadable content is the future of HD and Media distribution.

Beautiful Katamari – Dreamcast Graphics Revisited
December 14, 2007

Technically, you can say the graphics are from BEFORE the turn of the century but even that wouldn’t be justifying how horrible they are…
I love the game. It is addictive and hilarious. You play the role of Prince, a little pill-headed dude who rolls around a Katamari collecting objects smaller than the Katamari itself – objects bigger will not stick. The idea is that you keep collecting ever increasingly huge objects from the environment in order to plug a hole in the fabric of space-time and save the universe. The total size of your Katamari can be seen in the corner of your screen so that you know how close you are to your goal. As you can see in the picture, this Katamari contains thumb tacks, bottle caps, pencils, and octagonal coins – amounting in a modest 6cm – 0mm size.
The Katamari series originally came out on all Sony platforms, but since it has come out on Xbox 360, development on PS3 has been abandoned. To be honest, aside from different “missions” and online play, I am not really sure what they improved from earlier versions. The polygon graphics look like they are from a 1980′s “futuristic” music video, with many objects simply being represented as cubes. Fortunately the entire game experience is completely trippy, and makes you just laugh off the ghetto graphics because you are too amazed at how weird the entire concept is.
It is simplistic and addictive – perfect for anyone looking to experiment with illicit substances without the chemicals. Check it out, there is a free demo download on Xbox Live. Just make sure you have a friend to guide you through this new and exciting experience.

Modchips 101!
June 20, 2007
Modchips, just add salt!
The music and movie industries have always implemented methods to prevent copying and illegal redistribution of their products. Obviously, they do this to create jobs, and make money. Although, some would argue that they do this simply because they can. Unfortunately, these methods of protection limit our free use and often dictate what we can do with items we have purchased. Let’s not get into the legalities here. One side of the argument is the purchase and use of computer software – you do not own it, you are merely licensing it for your use. With music, movies and games, the same thing applies. We are purchasing the right to play and use the product for our personal enjoyment. Not to copy or broadcast. Ok, fine. The consumer’s main argument has always been what right doea a company have to tell you what you can do with something you have purchased – like your car, can you be told where when and how you can use it? In relation to software, what happens if your original media is damaged, can you get a replacement copy without having to purchase the product again? The answer is of course no. Well that just doesn’t sit right for the average consumer. Why can we not copy or backup our purchased products for safekeeping? Well, simply put, because there is no way to legitimize your damaged media claim, and secondly, because they can make more money.

The PS3 getting hit harder than Nancy Kerrigan
April 3, 2007
Interesting numbers released for Sorny’s PS2.5

The UK release went quite well in the beginning and for the first week. However, in the second week of sales the numbers have fallen off the charts for a newly released console. Dropping a whopping 82% in hardware sales. I think this has something to do with retailers not including a HDTV like they did at launch. I’d be pretty p’od if I wasn’t one of the lucky ones. Either way I have never seen this type of reaction towards a new console.
Is this the beginning of the end for PS3 or are people just waiting for price drops and more content? I’ll go with the waiting/content…

Blu-Ray? HD DVD? F*** that I want my Betamax!!
March 23, 2007
Recently there has been a buzz over the high definition video war. In one corner we have Blu-Ray, in the other HD DVD, but isn’t there 3, and sometimes 4 corners to most wrestling/boxing rings? In this writers opinion, that third corner needs to be filled by a format that the public just quite wasn’t ready for in the 80′s. Betamax will make a triumphant return to yours and my home theater systems. I mean look at the thing, it’s beautiful.
At the time of it’s introduction Betamax was of superior quality then that which VHS could provide. The only discrepancy was that it cost more, and Jenna Jameson and the rest of the porn industry sided with VHS, apparently that was enough. Those stuck with Betamax players after it’s slow and painful defeat were left out in the dark, but I soon believe you’ll be dusting off those players and figuring out how the hell you plug them in to your HDTV.
Now some of you might and most definetly are saying, but John how could you be looking at a format that’s so inferior? To you I respond with this; sure HD DVD and Blu-Ray offer high resolution video, and 10000.156 surround sound, but think of the cost. With our technological advances we could no doubt own a vast collection of all Betamax films for at least…. 1/2 the price! I’m a university student, and what I pay for movies can have a huge effect on how much I can save for tuition payments, which is why I frequently pirate movies anyways, hence defeating the whole purpose of this article……….
The point is this gang, sure you may get lots of girls and make lots of friends by having a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player, but how much cooler could you be saying this “Hey baby, come check out my vast Betamax collection, if you want I’ll even let you blow inside the player to make it work.” This will no doubt get you laid 0 times.
