USB storage coming to an Xbox 360 near you

March 20, 2010

Finally: USB storage coming to an Xbox 360 near you

Good news for Xbox 360 owners: those USB ports on the front of your console won’t just be for show anymore. I mean, sure, you can do stuff such as charging your controllers with them or plugging in a wireless adapter, but you mysteriously can’t do what a universal port is supposed to enable you to do. Namely: use a USB memory stick to save your files. Instead, you had to rely on Microsoft’s small, overpriced memory unit. Not anymore!

From Joystiq:

Documentation obtained by Joystiq - and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources - reveals that “USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360″ will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to “increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update” will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.

Of course, there’s a catch. The 360 won’t let you just hook up another hard drive. You’ll only be able to configure around 16 GB to work with your system. For more than that, you’ll still be at the mercy of Microsoft’s proprietary 360 hard drives, which are, frankly, a rip off.

Now if only Microsoft would stop charging an arm and a leg for its hard drives, we’d be set!

Xbox 360’s Dashboard overhaul - November 19th

October 9, 2008

For all of you waiting on the release date for Xbox 360’s creepy avatar dashboard, look no further. It has been announced that we will be able to play, create and scroll around with the new software on November 19th, 2008.

The design looks promising, yet extremely juvenile. We just wonder what MS was thinking when they decided on this route. Considering most 360 gamers are 20 - 25.

However, who are we to complain; the dashboard did need a graphical update since day one.

Xbox 360 - Converting MKV to WMV-HD

October 5, 2008

Do you have an Xbox 360 & a bunch of Hi-Def MKV files that you cannot play on it?

Well if you do, and if you would like to stream your Hi-Def movies, follow this excellent guide.

Thanks to Chris Lynch for creating such a great guide to converting MKV to WMV-HD. His original forum post on http://www.xbox-scene.com can be found here

What does this guide do?

It shows the average/experienced computer user how to convert their MKV files to WMV-HD (5.1), using Windows XP or Vista.

Why would you want to do this?

The Xbox 360 is a great piece of hardware (sans red ring of death), that has the ability to consolidate your multimedia experience. However, MS has limited the soft-features available for your use. Whether or not this is because of legal issues or if MS has a master plan for the 360; it’s annoying!

Download the guide here and convert to your hearts content.

Microsoft comes clean with 360 Price drop

July 13, 2008

By now everyone has heard that the 360 has indeed received a price drop for the 20GB model. However, Microsoft has finally come clean and has given a reason for this…

The new pricepoint, isn’t a new pricepoint! It’s MS’sway of selling off the remaining 20GB models to make room for the new 60GB sku. Expect to pay $349 for the new sku. And the 20GB is available at $299, while supplies last.

Priced at $299.00 it’s hard to resist picking one up (if you don’t have one already). Although it’s a good way to get a cheap 360 with a HDD. Just remember that 20GB just isn’t enough for live these days. With downloadable movies, arcade games, game clips and Xbox originals you’ll run through the 12GB (available for use on the 20GB) pretty quickly. It may be worth your $50 to wait until the 60GB is available.

Bioshock - No longer a Xbox 360 & PC exclusive

June 1, 2008

2K Games officially that BioShock will in fact be ported over to the PlayStation 3, and will arrive this October. Not only is the game coming, which PS3 owners should be happy enough about, but it will also contain additional content that has yet to be revealed; perhaps some new plasmids?

Christoph Hartman, President of 2K, commented on the announcement saying: “Since BioShock for Xbox 360 and Games for Windows won countless 2007 Game of the Year awards, we are excited to see the impact of this stellar title for the PlayStation 3 system when it debuts this fall.”

Bioshock was released in August of 2007 for both Xbox 360 and PC, shortly afterwards receiving rave reviews, multiple awards, and positive praise from pretty much everyone

GTA IV: Sales for the 1st Week

May 11, 2008

GTA IV Sales beat Halo 3’s record of $300-million in the first week of sales. GTA IV the new front-runner raked in $500-million in it’s first week. Selling a record breaking 3.6 million copies on the first day and 6 million copies for the entire week.

However, before comparing this record to Halo 3 remember that these stats don’t really apply to Halo 3 as this game was only released for the Xbox 360. GTA IV was released for both next-gen consoles.

Still, it’s an impressive feat and all the power to Take-Two.
