Telus smacks the competition with HSPA+ network, iPhone, HTC Hero and LG Chocolate

Telus already announced that it’d be launching the iPhone in November, but it’s just now gotten official with an actual date: November 5th — which just so happens to also be the day that it lights up its brand new HSPA+ network. Unfortunately for anyone hoping that a little competition would spark a price war, Telus is matching Rogers’ prices across the board, starting at $99.99 for the basic 8GB iPhone 3G, and moving up to $199.99 for the 16GB 3GS, and $299.99 for the 32GB 3GS (all on a three-year contract, of course). What’s more, Telus has also taken the opportunity to offer the first official confirmation of some of the other devices that’ll take advantage of its new network, including the HTC Hero, the previously rumored LG New Chocolate (a.k.a BL40), the Blackberry Bold 9700, and the Nokia E71 (plus a USB stick, for good measure). No prices or release dates for any of those just yet, unfortunately, but the Hero and New Chocolate are apparently Telus exclusives.
RIM suing the already hurting Motorola

MONTREAL (Reuters) - BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion has sued Motorola , over what the Canadian company says are patent infringements and “exorbitant” licensing fees, according to court documents.
The civil action, filed on Friday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, alleges that Motorola infringed on a number of patents held by RIM.
In addition, RIM alleges that Motorola “is demanding exorbitant royalties…for patents that Motorola claims are essential to various standards for mobile wireless telecommunications and wireless computing that RIM practices.”
This includes technology that allows mobile telephone handset users to use Wi-Fi, RIM said.
At the same time, Motorola is refusing to acknowledge or pay royalties for certain patents held by RIM, the BlackBerry-maker said.
RIM claims that Motorola’s response to the “declining fortunes” of its own handset business can been seen in dramatic increases in royalties charged to RIM.
None of the allegations has been proved in court.

Virgin Mobile Canada - Some ups, some downs…

Before I get started on their service, I just wanted to say that I was quite excited to have an alternative cell phone provider. Roger’s, Bell & Telus each have their positives and negatives but Virgin is by far the most interesting company. Roger’s offers a great selection of cell phones that can appeal to any one. Bell offers a horrible phone selection but the best service in my opinion. Telus…well Telus is run by a bunch of hippies and anyone who knows me knows that I hate hippies.
On with the show
Virgin Mobile, a company that offers Canadians an alternative cell phone solution. Albeit an interesting one at that. Aimed at young adults and people like me (26) that don’t want to grow-up, ever. Their network is based on a partnership between Bell Mobility and Sir Richard Branson. This offers great coverage within Canada, but I wouldn’t purchase one of these phones if you plan on traveling.
The Phone - Samsung A300
The phone that I chose is the Samsung A300. A simple phone with (in today’s standards) a basic feature set. All the regular bells & whistles eg. Camera, browser, poly-phonic tones, blue-tooth, an interesting menu system with pigs, underwear, “sexy” lips and chainsaws. The battery is a horrendous display of what Lithium-Ion can in fact do. With average usage (5 - 10 calls/day @1-3mins each) I was recharging the battery every 24-48hrs. Turn on blue-tooth and there goes the neighborhood and your chance to make any phone calls.
The Samsung A300 is great for people that need a phone to be just that, a phone. The camera’s crap, the browser is sub-par and the screen is dull and boring. If you’re interested in functionality, go with something else. Just remember that if you are annoyed with recharging batteries everyday stay away from this phone.
Rogers picks up iPhone - Canadian’s hide their wallets

Say hello to iPhone.
A Boy Genius report states (now this doesn’t mean it’s true) that Rogers and the iPhone are teaming up for a December 7th 2007 release date. So, what will Canadians be paying for their new toy? $499 on a three-year contract….If I’m not mistaken our golden dollar is (at the time of 11:52am Oct. 27) worth 1.037883 U.S. dollars.
Most likely this rumour is not true, and Canadians will have to continue to sneak across the border in order to get their iPhone. To be honest, I would rather cross the border and pick up an iPhone for the bargain basement price of $399 USD or $383 CND than be extorted by Rogers. Crap, I’ll even sign-up with AT&T and pay long distance charges.
Canadian Supercar????

It seems that the rumours have been true and the Locus Plethore is actually making it’s way into production. First words out of all of our mouths “A Canadian supercar?” I was dumbfounded when I heard this, considering we all carry hockey sticks and have to walk to work through 4 feet of snow. That’s just in Southern Ontario, I would hate to see what people in the great white North go through to get to work.
Available in a modest 750 hp version or 1300hp version for guys with really really *big* wangs. Looking at this thing reminded me of a McLaren F1 which is not a bad thing by any means but being a Canadian I would expect a more original design. I guess when we have to market to our smaller but bigger brother we can’t be too adventurous or we’d be considered a threat to National Security.
Anyway, great building CDNs and I hope you keep a few up here for us as well.
